Hurricanes return to action this weekend

The Holland Hurricanes men’s and women’s volleyball teams kick off the second half of their ACAA regular seasons this weekend with a total of four matches.  The women will play host to the Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons (Saturday at 6pm & Sunday at 12pm) at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement in Charlottetown, with the men travelling to New Brunswick to take on the UNBSJ Seawolves (Saturday at 8pm & Sunday at 1pm) in Saint John.

The Hurricanes women’s team enters play in a tie for second in the ACAA standings with a 7-3 record. They finished play prior to the holidays on a three-match winning streak and now sit in 15thin the CCAA National Championship rankings.

The Dragons are in a tie for seventh with a 1-9 record. The Hurricanes won the only previous matchup versus the Dragons, a straight-sets sweep on November 4 in Church Point, NS.

Roster changes for the women’s Hurricanes for the second semester is the addition of outside hitter, Jasmine Smith of Falmouth, Nova Scotia.

Smith spent last season as a member of the MSVU Mystics, leading them to an ACAA Championship as well as being named a CCAA All-Canadian and ACAA All-Conference player. Previous to that, Smith played as a member of the Acadia University Axewomen of the Atlantic University Sport conference.

The men’s Hurricanes enter the 2019 portion of their regular season in third place in the ACAA regular season standings with a 2-5 record; the UNBSJ Seawolves are in second place at 4-3.

The ‘Canes have dropped both matches this year versus the Seawolves, suffering a pair of five-set losses on November 10 in Saint John and December 2 in Charlottetown.

The Hurricanes have added middle, John Ronalds, and outside hitter, Simon Archibald, to the roster for the second half.

Ronalds, in his first season, is from Bathurst, NB while Archibald is a second-year player from Aylesford, NS.
